Greening economies in the European Union’s Eastern neighborhood, Batumi, 9 June 2016

BATUMI, Georgia, 9 June 2016 – Ways to green economies in the European Union’s Eastern neighbourhood, specifically in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, were the focus of a discussion at an event organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and its partners in Batumi today.

A related project, funded by the EU, is currently being implemented by UNIDO together with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

UNIDO’s role focuses on promoting Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) in the six countries, by helping small and medium size enterprises working in the food, chemicals and construction sectors.

Participants noted the green example achieved by Kommunarka, one of the leading confectionary factories in Minsk, Belarus, which is now using cleaner technology, introduced after an RECP assessment, in chocolate production. The process allows the reuse of sweet water for the production of marmalade.
